932 - Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Samad informed us, saying: 'Amr ibn 'Uthman narrated to us, saying: Baqiyyah narrated to us, saying: I asked al-Zubaydi and al-Awza'i about al-jabr (compulsion). Al-Zubaydi said: "The affair of Allah is greater, and His power is greater, than that He should compel or thwart; rather, He decrees, ordains, creates, and fashions His servant according to what He loves." Al-Awza'i said: "I do not know of any basis for al-jabr in the Qur'an or the Sunnah, so I fear saying that. However, al-qada' (divine decree), al-qadar (divine predestination), creation, and fashoning (al-jabl) — this is known in the Qur'an and the Hadith from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. Both of these terms were only placed and mentioned here out of fear that a person might become doubtful regarding the congregation (al-jama'ah) and the affirmation (of faith)."
