938 - Mansur ibn al-Walid informed me that Ja'far ibn Muhammad al-Nasa'i narrated to them, saying: I heard Abu Abd Allah (Ahmad ibn Hanbal), and it was mentioned in his presence that a hadith scholar said: "Whatever Allah wills, He does, and whatever He does not will, He does not do." Then a man in his presence said: "Whatever Allah wills, or whatever Allah does not will, He does." He (Ahmad) considered that (statement) to be grave. I said: "Should he be asked to repent?" He said: "What is there to repent for?" He said: "This is disbelief."
