964 - Muhammad ibn Abi Harun and Muhammad ibn Ja'far informed me that Abu al-Harith narrated to them that he said to Abu 'Abd Allah: "What of one who says that faith is speech?" He replied: "Whoever says that faith is speech, he is a Murji'." He said: And Abu 'Abd Allah was asked while I was listening about what Irja' is, and he said: "Whoever says that faith is speech, he is a Murji'. The Sunnah regarding it is for you to say: Faith is speech and action, it increases and decreases." And I heard Abu 'Abd Allah saying: It was said to Ibn al-Mubarak: "Do you hold the view of Irja'?" He replied: "I say that faith is speech and action, so how could I be a Murji'?"
٩٦٤ - وَأَخْبَرَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي هَارُونَ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، أَنَّ أَبَا الْحَارِثِ حَدَّثَهُمْ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ: فَمَنْ قَالَ: الْإِيمَانُ قَوْلٌ؟ قَالَ: " مَنْ قَالَ: الْإِيمَانُ قَوْلٌ، فَهُوَ مُرْجِئٌ "، قَالَ: وَسُئِلَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ وَأَنَا أَسْمَعُ عَنِ الْإِرْجَاءِ مَا هُوَ؟ قَالَ: " مَنْ قَالَ: الْإِيمَانُ قَوْلٌ، فَهُوَ مُرْجِئٌ. وَالسُّنَّةُ فِيهِ أَنْ تَقُولَ: الْإِيمَانُ قَوْلٌ وَعَمَلٌ يَزِيدُ وَيَنْقُصُ ". وَسَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ يَقُولُ: قِيلَ لِابْنِ الْمُبَارَكِ: تَرَى الْإِرْجَاءَ؟ قَالَ: " أَنَا أَقُولُ: الْإِيمَانُ قَوْلٌ وَعَمَلٌ، وَكَيْفَ أَكُونُ مُرْجِئًا "
