983 - Abu Bakr al-Marrudhi informed us, saying: I heard Abu 'Abd Allah say: Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah said: Al-Thawri said to me: "Speak to Mis'ar." Abu 'Abd Allah said: "[Regarding the statement] 'I am in doubt about everything except for faith,' [Mis'ar] said: 'I am not in doubt regarding my faith.' [Sufyan] said: 'Sufyan wanted him to make an exception [i.e., by saying: I am in faith, if Allah wills].'"
٩٨٣ - أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْمَرُّوذِيُّ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، يَقُولُ: قَالَ سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، قَالَ لِيَ الثَّوْرِيُّ: كَلِّمْ مِسْعَرًا. قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ: " يُشَكُّ فِي كُلِّ شَيْءٍ إِلَّا فِي الْإِيمَانِ، قَالَ: لَا أَشُكُّ فِي إِيمَانِي، قَالَ: كَانَ سُفْيَانُ يُرِيدُ مِنْهُ أَنْ يَسْتَثْنِيَ "
