1037 - Mansur ibn al-Walid informed me that Ja'far ibn Muhammad narrated to them, saying: I heard Abu 'Abd Allah [Ahmad ibn Hanbal] when a man from Khurasan asked him, saying: "We have some people among us who say: Faith is speech without action, and some who say: It is speech and action." He replied: "Do they not read from the Book of Allah: {And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakah. And that is the correct religion} [Al-Bayyinah: 5]?"
١٠٣٧ - وَأَخْبَرَنِي مَنْصُورُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ، أَنَّ جَعْفَرَ بْنَ مُحَمَّدٍ حَدَّثَهُمْ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، وَسَأَلَهُ رَجُلٌ خُرَاسَانِيٌّ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّ عِنْدَنَا قَوْمًا يَقُولُونَ: الْإِيمَانُ قَوْلٌ بِغَيْرِ عَمَلٍ، وَقَوْمٌ يَقُولُونَ: قَوْلٌ وَعَمَلٌ، فَقَالَ: " مَا يَقْرَءُونَ مِنْ ⦗٥٩٠⦘ كِتَابِ اللَّهِ: {وَمَا أُمِرُوا إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ الدِّينَ حُنَفَاءَ، وَيُقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ، وَيُؤْتُوا الزَّكَاةَ، وَذَلِكَ دِينُ الْقَيِّمَةِ} [البينة: ٥] "
