1063 - Muhammad ibn Abi Harun informed me that Ishaq narrated to them, saying: Abu Abd Allah [Ahmad ibn Hanbal] said: Shu'ba said: I said to Hammad ibn Abi Sulayman: "These individuals—al-A'mash, Zubayd, and Mansur—have narrated to us from Shaqiq, from 'Abd Allah [Ibn Mas'ud], from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): 'Reviling a Muslim is an act of transgression (fusuq).' So, whom are we to accuse [of error/unreliability]? Are we to accuse al-A'mash? Are we to accuse Mansur? Are we to accuse Abu Wa'il?" Ishaq said: I asked Abu Abd Allah: "And what [reason] would I have to accuse Abu Wa'il?" He replied: "Accuse his [i.e., Hammad's] corrupt opinion," meaning Hammad ibn Abi Sulayman. He [Ibn Hanbal] said to me: Ibn 'Awn said: "Hammad ibn Abi Sulayman was one of our companions until he introduced what he introduced." He [the narrator] said: "He introduced Irja' (the doctrine of the Murji'a)."
