1067 - Al-Hasan ibn 'Abd al-Wahhab informed me, saying: Abu Bakr ibn Hammad al-Muqri' narrated to us, saying: Some of our companions informed me, saying: I heard Abu 'Abd Allah [Ahmad ibn Hanbal] saying: "If the statement were as the Murji'ah claim—that faith is [merely] a statement—then making the exception [saying 'if Allah wills'] after the statement would be ugly, [such as if] you were to say: 'There is no god but Allah, if Allah wills.' However, the exception is [made] regarding the deeds."
