812 - Abu Bakr al-Marwudhi informed us, saying: Abu Abd Allah said to me: Do you know Abu Sayyar? He named him. It reached me that he refuted a hadith that Abu Hammam narrated. Abu Bakr said: Abu Hammam had narrated a hadith containing something regarding the companions of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, and Abu Hammam thought it was a merit. When the second gathering occurred, and we were present, a group sprang up and said: O Abu Hammam, have you narrated a bad hadith? He replied: I have made a mistake; strike it through and do not narrate it from me. Abu Bakr said: So I entered upon Abu Abd Allah, having just come from Abu Hammam’s, and he said: What did he narrate to you today? I brought out the book to him, and he looked, and there were therein hadiths regarding the concession for one who used to wear purple (arjuwan). He became angry and said: Is this a time to narrate such concessions? Abu Bakr said: And they brought hadiths that had been written from Ibrahim ibn Sa'id al-Jawhari, so they went to him. He said: Among them are things I did not narrate. This man used to buy my provisions, and he wrote from my book what I had not read to him. But I shall strike them out from my book, and I shall not narrate anything from them, and I seek God's forgiveness and shall declare this in this gathering. So he stood up in his gathering and said such words. Then Ibn al-Kurdayyah spoke about taking the hadiths that I had so that he would not narrate anything from them. Ibn al-Kurdayyah came twice and said: By God, by God, bring the hadiths so that we may cut them up and not narrate anything from them, and we shall strike them out in your presence. I brought out the book, and Ibn al-Kurdayyah began striking through them, hadith by hadith. Abu Bakr said: And I never knew Ibrahim to narrate anything from them until he died.
