822 - Al-Hasan ibn 'Abd al-Wahhab informed us, saying: Al-Fadl ibn Ziyad narrated to us, saying: I heard Abu 'Abd Allah, when a man handed him a book containing gathered hadith regarding what is reprehensible concerning the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and the like. He looked into it, then said: "None would compile these except a wicked man." And I heard Abu 'Abd Allah say: "It reached me regarding Sallam ibn Abi Muti' that he came to Abu 'Awanah and borrowed from him a book he possessed which contained calamities—from what Al-A'mash narrated—and he handed it over to Abu 'Awanah. Sallam then took it and burned it." A man said to Abu 'Abd Allah: "I hope that does not harm him at all, if Allah wills?" Abu 'Abd Allah replied: "Harm him? Rather, he shall be rewarded for it, if Allah wills."
