1176 - He said: Abu Abd Allah narrated to us, saying: Yazid narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Amr narrated to us, from Abu Salama, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: "Indeed, the deceased hears the sound of their sandals when they turn away from him. If he is a believer, his prayer will be at his head, his fasting to his right, his zakat (almsgiving) to his left, and his righteous deeds—charity, kindness, and benevolence toward people—at his feet. He is approached from the direction of his head, and the prayer says: 'There is no entry from my side.' Then he is approached from his right, and the fasting says: 'There is no entry from my side.' Then he is approached from his left, and the zakat says: 'There is no entry from my side.' Then he is approached from his feet, and the righteous deeds—charity, prayer, kindness, and benevolence toward people—say: 'There is no entry from my side.' He is then told: 'Sit up.' He sits up, and the sun is represented to him as if it is setting. He is told: 'Tell us about what we are asking you.' He says: 'Let me pray.' They say: 'You shall do so, but tell us about what we are asking you.' He says: 'And what do you ask?' They say: 'What do you say about this man who was among you? And what do you testify regarding him?' He says: 'Muhammad?' They say: 'Yes.' He says: 'I testify that he is the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and that he came with the truth from Allah.' It is said to him: 'Upon that you lived, upon that you died, and upon that you shall be resurrected, if Allah wills.' Then a door to Paradise is opened for him, and he is told: 'That is your seat therein and what Allah has prepared for you in it.' He increases in joy and happiness. Then a door to Hellfire is opened for him, and he is told: 'That is your seat therein and what Allah had prepared for you in it had you disobeyed Him.' He increases in joy and happiness. Then his grave is expanded for him by seventy cubits, it is illuminated for him, and his soul is placed in a sweet breeze in the form of a green bird that clings to the trees of Paradise, and the body is returned to the dust from which it originated. That is the saying of Allah, the Blessed and Exalted: {Allah keeps firm those who believe, with the firm word, in worldly life and in the Hereafter; and Allah sends astray the wrongdoers. And Allah does what He wills} [Ibrahim: 27]. But if he is a disbeliever, he is approached from his head and nothing is found; then he is approached from his right and nothing is found; then he is approached from his left and nothing is found; then he is approached from his feet and nothing is found. He is told: 'Sit up.' He sits up in fear and terror. He is told: 'What do you say about this man who was among you? And what do you testify regarding him?' He says: 'Which man?' He is told: 'The man who was among you,' but he cannot recall his name until it is said to him: 'Muhammad.' He says: 'I do not know; I heard people saying something, so I said what the people said.' It is said to him: 'Upon that you lived, upon that you died, and upon that you shall be resurrected, if Allah wills.' Then a door to Hellfire is opened for him, and he is told: 'That is your seat therein and what Allah has prepared for you in it.' He increases in regret and ruin. Then a door to Paradise is opened for him, and he is told: 'That is your seat therein and what Allah had prepared for you in it had you obeyed Him.' He increases in regret and ruin. Then his grave is tightened upon him until his ribs are crushed; that is the 'straitened life' of which Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, spoke: {But whoever turns away from My remembrance - indeed, he will have a depressed [i.e., straitened] life, and We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind} [Taha: 124]."
