1232 - He said: Abu 'Abd Allah narrated to us, he said: 'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, he said: Ma'mar narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from 'Ata' ibn Yazid al-Laythi, from 'Ubayd Allah ibn 'Adi ibn al-Khiyar, that al-Miqdad ibn al-Aswad narrated to him, he said: I said, "O Messenger of Allah, what if I were to encounter a man from the polytheists in combat, and he strikes me and cuts off my hand, then as I reach out to strike him back, he says, 'La ilaha illa Allah' (There is no god but Allah); should I kill him or let him be?" He replied: "No, rather let him be." I said: "Even if he cut off my hand?" He said: "Even if he did so." I questioned him again once or twice, so the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "If you kill him after he has said 'La ilaha illa Allah,' you will be like him before he said it, and he will be like you before you killed him."
