1098 - Yusuf ibn Abd Allah wrote to me, saying: Ahmad ibn Mutahhar and more than one (narrator) narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Walid al-Tayalisi narrated to us, saying: Sallam ibn Abi Muti' narrated to us, saying: Ma'mar narrated to me—or I heard Ma'mar—from al-Zuhri, from 'Amir ibn Sa'd, from his father, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave gifts; he gave to so-and-so and so-and-so, and withheld from so-and-so. He (Sa'd) said: I said, "O Messenger of Allah, you gave to so-and-so and so-and-so, and you withheld from so-and-so, and he is a believer (mu'min)?" He (the Prophet) said: "Do not call him a believer, but rather call him a Muslim." Al-Zuhri said: "The Bedouins say, 'We have believed.' Say, 'You have not believed; but say, "We have submitted (aslamna)"'" [Al-Hujurat: 14].
