1101 - Muhammad ibn al-Mundhir ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz informed us, saying: Ahmad ibn al-Hasan al-Tirmidhi narrated to us, saying: Abu 'Abd Allah dictated to us: From so-and-so, son of so-and-so, to so-and-so, son of so-and-so, peace be upon you. I praise to you Allah, besides Whom there is no god, and I ask Him to invoke blessings upon Muhammad, His servant and Messenger. To proceed: May Allah treat you well in all matters, and may He protect you and us from all evil by His mercy. Your letter has reached me, along with that which you have conveyed to me therein; we ask Allah for success for us and for you in that which He loves and is pleased with. As for what you mentioned regarding the statement of those who say: "Faith is merely speech," this is the view of the people of Irja' (postponement/Murji'ah), a newly invented statement that our predecessors and those we take as role models did not hold. It has been narrated from the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, that which strengthens the fact that faith is speech and action. Then he mentioned the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas regarding the delegation of 'Abd al-Qays, and the hadith of al-Hasan ibn Musa, who said: Ibn Lahi'ah narrated to us, saying: Usamah ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Ibn Shihab, from Hanzalah ibn 'Ali ibn al-Asqa': "That Abu Bakr sent Khalid ibn al-Walid and ordered him to fight the people on the basis of five, so whoever abandons one of the five, fight him for it just as you fight for the five: the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, the establishment of prayer, the giving of zakat, and fasting Ramadan."
