1102 - Miskin ibn Bukayr narrated to us, saying: Thabit ibn 'Ajlan narrated to us, from Sulaym Abu 'Amir: "The delegation of al-Hamra' came to 'Uthman ibn 'Affan to pledge their allegiance to him upon Islam and upon those behind them. So he took their pledge that they would not associate anything with Allah, that they would establish prayer, give zakat, fast, and abandon the festival of the Magians (fire-worshippers). When they said: 'Yes,' he accepted their pledge." He also mentioned the hadith of 'Umar, may Allah have mercy on him: "There is no share in Islam for the one who abandons prayer." Thus, these are the leaders of guidance after the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. Abu Bakr al-Siddiq said to Khalid ibn al-Walid what he said, and 'Umar said regarding the one who abandons prayer what he said, and 'Uthman said when he stipulated upon them what he said. This is what has reached us, along with many other matters that have come in the reports (athar) from the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him—may Allah be pleased with them—regarding the one who abandons prayer, the one who abandons zakat, Hajj, and 'Umrah, and the description of the hypocrite, among many other matters too numerous to mention. All of these are in opposition to the people of Irja'. Perhaps for a single matter, there are such-and-such number of hadiths, so beware that the Murji'ah do not cause you to stumble regarding the affair of your religion, and let that be with gentleness and by avoiding argumentation with them, until you attain what you desire of that."
Azhar narrated to us, from Ibn 'Awn, who said: Muhammad said: "They used to believe that as long as one is upon the trace (al-athar/the established tradition), he is upon the path." And know that abandoning dispute and argumentation is the way of those who have passed; they were not people of dispute or argumentation, but rather they were people of submission and action. We ask Allah for success for us and for you in all our affairs in that which He loves and is pleased with, and that He may protect us and you from all evil by His mercy. And peace be upon you.
