1084 - Muhammad ibn Abi Harun and Muhammad ibn Ja'far informed me—some of them adding more than others—that Abu al-Harith al-Sa'igh narrated to them, saying: I asked Abu 'Abd Allah [Ahmad ibn Hanbal], saying: 'What about the saying [of the Prophet]: "The adulterer does not commit adultery while he is a believer, and the thief does not steal while he is a believer, and the one who drinks wine does not drink it while he is a believer"?' He replied: 'They have interpreted it. As for 'Ata', he said: "Faith departs from him." And Tawus said: "When he does that, faith ceases to be with him."
