Maymun and 'Abd al-Karim heard that some of the Murji'ah came to you, presented their views to you, and that you accepted their views.' He asked: 'Did 'Abd al-Karim and Maymun attribute that to me?' I replied: 'No.' He said: 'Twelve men from among them came to me while I was ill and said: "O Abu Muhammad, has it reached you that a man came to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, with a black Abyssinian slave girl and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I have an obligation to manumit a slave; do you consider this one to be a believer?' The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to her: 'Do you testify that there is no god but Allah?' She said: 'Yes.' He said: 'And do you testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah?' She said: 'Yes.' He said: 'And do you testify that Paradise is true, and that the Fire is true?' She said: 'Yes.' He said: 'And do you testify that Allah will resurrect [the dead] after death?' She said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Then manumit her.'" He said: 'So they left my presence claiming me as one of their own.'
