1704 - al-Hasan ibn 'Abd al-Wahhab informed me, saying: Abu Bakr ibn Hammad narrated to us, [94] saying: Abu Thabit al-Khattab narrated to me, saying: I was sitting with Ishaq ibn Abi 'Umar when a Jahmi man passed by us—and I knew that he was a Jahmi—and he greeted us with peace. I returned the greeting, but Ishaq ibn Abi 'Umar did not return it. Ishaq then said to me: "Do you return the greeting to a Jahmi?" I replied: "Do I not return the greeting to a Jew or a Christian?" He asked: "Are you content with [the opinion of] Abu 'Abd Allah [Ahmad ibn Hanbal]?" I replied: "Yes." He said: "So I went early in the morning to Abu 'Abd Allah and informed him of the event. He exclaimed: "Subhan Allah! You return the greeting to a Jahmi?" I said: "Do I not return the greeting to a Jew or a Christian?" He replied: "The matter of the Jew and the Christian is already clear."
