1769 - I heard Abu Bakr al-Marwudhi say: I heard Abu Abd Allah [Ahmad ibn Hanbal], when he mentioned the Jahmiyyah, say: "They were only intended to be refuted. Do you know what these people have done to Islam?" It was said to Abu Abd Allah: "Is a man sinful if he rejoices at what befalls the companions of Ibn Abi Du'ad?" He replied: "And who would not rejoice at this?" It was said to him: "Ibn al-Mubarak said: 'The one who takes revenge on al-Hajjaj is, in fact, taking revenge for al-Hajjaj against the people.'" He [Ahmad] said: "What does this have to do with al-Hajjaj? These people wanted to alter the religion."
