1797 - And 'Ali ibn 'Isa informed me that Hanbal narrated to them, saying: I said to Abu 'Abd Allah: "Ya'qub ibn Shayba and Zakariyya al-Sharki ibn 'Ammar claim that they only took this matter of 'stopping' (al-waqf) from you." Abu 'Abd Allah replied: "We used to command silence and avoid engaging in speech and regarding the Qur'an. But when we were summoned to a matter, there was no choice for us but to repel that and clarify what ought to be clarified regarding it." I said to Abu 'Abd Allah: "So what of the one who stops and says: 'I do not say it is created nor that it is uncreated'?" He replied: "That is evil speech. This is the place of evil, his 'stopping.' How can he not know? It is either permissible or forbidden; either this way or that way. Allah, the Might and Majestic, has exalted the Qur'an above being created. These people only resort to this in order to eventually say that it is created, so they deemed the position of 'stopping' (al-waqf) acceptable for themselves and manifested it. The Qur'an is the Speech of Allah, uncreated, in every aspect and in every inflection." I said: "May Allah be pleased with you, you have indeed clarified this matter which had become confused for the people." He said: "Do not sit with them, and do not speak to any of them."
