1799 - Muhammad ibn Abi Harun and Muhammad ibn Ja'far informed me that Abu al-Harith narrated to them, saying: I asked Abu 'Abd Allah, saying: 'Some people say that these Waqifa (those who refrain from taking a position on the Qur'an) are worse than the Jahmiyya.' He said: 'They are more effective at beguiling the people than the Jahmiyya; they cast doubt among the people. That is because the true nature of the Jahmiyya has already become clear, whereas these [Waqifa], when they say: "We do not speak [on the matter]," they sway the common people. This inevitably leads to the position of the Jahmiyya.' He said: And I heard him being asked about the one who says: 'I say the Qur'an is the Speech of Allah, and I remain silent.' He said: 'No, this [person] is a doubter; no, [they must remain as such] until they say: "Uncreated."'
