From the Injunctions of the Messenger of Allah, Peace and blessings of God be upon him

197 - ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us: My father and Abū Khaythama informed me, saying: Al-Walīd ibn Muslim narrated to us: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Yazīd ibn Jābir narrated to me: Busr ibn ʿUbayd Allāh al-Ḥaḍramī narrated to me that he heard Abū Idrīs al-Khawlānī, that he heard Ḥudhayfa ibn al-Yamān say: The people used to ask the Messenger of Allah, Peace and blessings of God be upon him, about good, while I used to ask him about evil for fear that it would overtake me. So I said to him: "O Messenger of Allah! We were in ignorance and evil, then Allah Almighty brought us this good; will there be any evil after this good?" He said: "Yes." I said: "Will there be any good after that evil?" He said: "Yes, but with some smoke in it." I said: "And what is its smoke?" He said: "A people who guide by other than my guidance; you will recognize from them some things and disapprove of others." I said: "Will there be any evil after that good?" He said: "Yes, callers ⦗75⦘ at the gates of Hellfire; whoever responds to them to it, they cast him into it." I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Describe them to us." He said: "They are from our skin and speak with our tongues." I said: "O Messenger of Allah! What do you command me to do if that overtakes me?" He said: "Stick to the Congregation of the Muslims and their Imam. If they have no Congregation nor an Imam, then separate yourself from all those sects, even if you have to bite onto the root of a tree until death overtakes you while you are upon that state." (1).
