The Grave Does Not Consume Faith
207 - ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us: Muḥammad ibn Ḥammād narrated to us, saying: I heard Abū al-Nuʿmān say: Jarīr ibn Ḥāzim narrated to us, saying: I heard al-Ḥasan say: There was a man from the people of the garrison town who used to frequent the ruler and receive [benefits] from them. Then he abandoned that and sat in his house. His family and sons came to him and said: "Have you abandoned the ruler and your share from him?" But he paid no attention to them. So they said: "By God, if you do this, you will surely die crushed by poverty!" He said: "O my sons! By God, that I should die a believer crushed by poverty is more beloved to me than that I should die a fat hypocrite." Al-Ḥasan—May Allah have mercy on him—said: "He knew, by God, that the grave consumes fat and flesh, but does not consume Faith."
