and its stalks bear fruit; and the grief over what will sadden him on the Day of Resurrection clings to him and mixes with the black spot of his heart, whereupon various forms of the principles of Asceticism (Zuhd) regarding worldly life are stirred up from seclusion. When the servant reaches the degree of seclusion, remains patient upon it, and continues in it, that transfers him to the love of seclusion. The first thing that is stirred up from the love of seclusion is the servant's seeking sincerity and truthfulness in every word between him and his Lord. Seclusion grants him relief of the heart from worldly anxieties and abandoning dealing with created beings in taking and giving; and the obligation of enjoining good and forbidding evil falls away from him, as does flattery of people. There is stirred up from the love of seclusion: obscurity of the self and turning a blind eye among people, which is the beginning of the path of truthfulness, and from it comes sincerity. There is stirred up from the love of seclusion: Asceticism (Zuhd) regarding acquaintance with people, solace in Allah, and feeling burdened by sitting with anyone other than the people of Remembrance (Dhikr). Love of seclusion brings about prolonged silence without strain, and overcoming passion—which is patience—from which forbearance and deliberation manifest. There is stirred up from the love of seclusion: the servant's preoccupation with himself, his little concern with mentioning others, and seeking safety from that in which people are engaged. There is stirred up from the love of seclusion: an abundance of worries and sorrows, among which is that which stirs up reflection—which is the best of worship, and its source is pure Remembrance (Dhikr). There is stirred up from the love of seclusion: deeds that are hidden from the eyes of servants and manifest to Allah; and a little of that is much, and its source is truthfulness. There is stirred up from the love of seclusion: awakening from the heedlessness of worldly people, and losing track of news mentioned of it among elite and common folk. Love of seclusion brings about little ostentation and adornment for created beings, and that is among the callings of sincerity, and it is pure truthfulness.

And love of seclusion brings about: abandoning dispute and argumentation, both of which eliminate seeking leadership and lead to truthfulness. There is stirred up from the love of seclusion: killing greed and its causes of covetousness and desire for worldly life, and in that is strength for action. Love of seclusion brings about: little anger, the power to swallow rage, leaving malice and enmity, and acting with soundness of heart. There is stirred up from the love of seclusion: softness of hearts and mercy, both of which eliminate harshness and cruelty.
