From the Words of al-Fārūq Concerning Seclusion
13 - ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us, and Muḥammad ibn Abī Ḥātim al-Azdī narrated to us, saying: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Dāwūd narrated to us, saying: Shuʿba narrated to us, from Khubayb ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from Ḥafṣ ibn ʿĀṣim, who said: ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, May God be pleased with him, said: "Take your share of seclusion." It was transmitted by Wakīʿ in al-Zuhd (no. 253), Ibn Saʿd in al-Ṭabaqāt al-Kubrā (4/161), Nuʿaym ibn Ḥammād in (no. 11), Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim in (no. 84), Ibn Ḥibbān in (p. 81), al-Bayhaqī in (no. 121), and al-Khaṭṭābī in (p. 22), through routes from Shuʿba, with it. Al-Khaṭṭābī said: "If seclusion held nothing other than safety from backbiting and from seeing evil that one is unable to change, that alone would be much good."
I say: Its chain of transmission is weak; in it is a break between Ibn ʿĀṣim and ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (may God be pleased with him), as he did not meet him.
Al-Suyūṭī attributed it in (3/442 no. 8710 — in al-Muttaqī al-Hindī's arrangement) to Aḥmad in and al-ʿAskarī in .
I did not find it in the printed edition of Aḥmad's , which indicates that the printed edition is incomplete and not whole. And God knows best.
