With Sulaymān al-Khawwāṣ

56 - ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us, he said: Muḥammad ibn Hārūn narrated to me, Yaʿqūb ibn Kaʿb narrated to us, he said: A man called Isḥāq from among the people of Syria narrated to me, he said: Sulaymān al-Khawwāṣ was in Beirut, and Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz entered upon him and said: "Why do I see you in darkness?" He replied: "The darkness of the grave is more intense." He said: "Why do I see you alone, with no companion?" He replied: "I dislike having a companion whose due right I am unable to fulfill." Saʿīd said to him: "Take these dirhams, for we guarantee them to you on the Day of Resurrection." He said: "O Saʿīd! My soul did not respond to me regarding what it has responded to except after your toil, and I dislike habituating it to the likes of these dirhams of yours; who then will provide the like of them for me when morning comes? I have no need for them." He said: Then Saʿīd mentioned that to al-Auzāʿī, who said: "Leave Sulaymān, for had he lived among the Predecessors (Salaf), he would have been a hallmark." (1)
