From the Admonitions of Al-Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ

75 - ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us: Hārūn ibn ʿAbd Allāh narrated to me: Muḥammad ibn Yazīd narrated to us, saying: A man said: One day I passed by al-Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ while he was behind a pillar alone, and he was a friend of mine. So I came to him, greeted him with peace, and sat down. He said to me: "O my brother! What made you sit with me?" I said: "I saw you alone, so I seized the opportunity of your being alone." He said: "Indeed, had you not sat with me, it would have been better for you and better for me. So choose: either I stand up and leave you, which by God is better for me and better for you, or you stand up and leave me." I said: "No, rather I shall stand up and leave you, O Abū ʿAlī! So advise me with an admonition by which God may benefit me." He said: "O servant of God! Conceal your whereabouts, guard your tongue, and seek forgiveness from God for your Sin and for the believing men and believing women as He commanded you." (1)
