77 - ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us, saying: al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz narrated to us, saying: Abū al-Haytham narrated to us, on the authority of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ghālib, that he narrated to him, saying: I went out to an island, so we boarded the ship. He said: It brought us to land (1) at the edge of a barren village at the foot of a ruined mountain, in which there was no one. He said: So I went out and walked around in those ruins, contemplating their traces and what state they had been in, when I entered a house that looked as though it might be inhabited. He said: So I said: "Indeed, there must be something to this." He said: So I returned to my companions and said: "I have a favor to ask of you." They said: "And what is it?" I said: "That you stay for my sake one night." They said: "Yes." So I entered that house and said: "If it has occupants, they will seek shelter in it when night falls." So when night fell, I heard above it a sound descending from the top of the mountain, glorifying God, declaring His greatness, and praising Him. The sound kept drawing nearer with that until he entered the house. He said: And I did not see in that house anything except a jar with nothing in it, and a vessel in which he had no food. So he prayed whatever God willed that he pray, then he turned to that vessel and ate food from it, then he praised God, Exalted is He, then he went to the jar and drank a drink from it, then he stood up and prayed until morning came. When morning came, he performed the second call (iqama) for prayer and I prayed with him. He said: "May God have mercy on you! Did you enter my house without permission?!" He said: I said: "May God have mercy on you, I intended nothing but good. I said: I saw you go to this vessel and eat food from it, yet I had looked before that and saw nothing in it! And you went to that jar and drank a drink from it, yet I had looked before that and saw nothing!" He said: "Yes. There is no food I desire from the food of people except that I eat it from this vessel, nor any drink I desire from the drink of people except that I drink it from this jar." He said: I said: "Even if you desire fresh fish?" He said: "Even if I desire fresh fish." So I said: "May God have mercy on you, this nation was not commanded to do what you have done; it was commanded to adhere to the congregation and the mosques, due to the virtue of prayers in congregation, visiting the sick, and following funerals." He said: "Right over here is a village in which is everything you mentioned, and I am moving to it." He said: Then he grieved for me for a time, then his grief ceased, so I thought that he had died. And when ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ghālib died, the smell of musk was found coming from his grave (2).
