Fifth Section: The Statements of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) regarding the Affirmation of Sitting

  1. On the authority of ‘Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning the statement of Allah the Exalted: {The Most Merciful rose over the Throne} [Ta-Ha: 5], he said: “[He is] sitting.”

[Its graduation will follow under No. 47].

  1. On the authority of ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning the statement of Allah the Exalted: {The Most Merciful rose over the Throne}, he said: “He sat.”

[Recorded by Ibn al-Muhibb in al-Sifat (1-106q). Al-Taymi acknowledged it, as mentioned in al-Siyar (20/87), and it will be presented in its entirety later. Ibn al-Qayyim stated in Ijtima‘ al-Juyush (p. 251): “And in the Tafsir of al-Suddi, on the authority of Abu Malik and Abu Salih, from Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both)...” and he mentioned it. Mahmoud Shakir authenticated this chain of narration in the footnotes of Tafsir al-Tabari (1/156)].
