even if it were restricted (mawquf) to Muhammad ibn Ka‘b, it would still not be detrimental; because Muhammad ibn Ka‘b is among the trustworthy scholars (thiqat). He narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas, Jabir, and others among the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), and it is not permissible to suspect him of narrating something in our Law that is false or abrogated; rather, one must maintain a good opinion of him.” [End of quote].

[The version in Ibn Jarir’s work is from the narration of Sulayman ibn Humayd, who heard Muhammad ibn Ka‘b al-Qurazi narrating it to ‘Umar ibn ‘Abd al-‘Aziz].

Al-Darimi (may Allah have mercy upon him) stated in al-Radd ‘ala al-Jahmiyyah (147), after citing this report and others: “All these hadiths—and more—have been transmitted regarding the descent of the Lord (Blessed and Exalted be He) in these instances. It was upon the confirmation of these and faith in them that we found the people of jurisprudence and insight among our shaykhs. Not one of them would deny them, nor refrain from narrating them, until this faction appeared, opposing the reports of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with rejection and striving diligently to repel them.” [End of quote].

  1. Mujahid (d. 103 AH) (may Allah have mercy upon him) said regarding the statement of the Exalted: {It may be that your Lord will raise you to a praised station} [al-Isra: 79]: “He will seat him with Him on the Throne.”

In another wording: “He will seat him (yuq‘iduhu) with Him.”

[Recorded by al-Khallal in al-Sunnah (248, 264), and he related a consensus (ijma‘) regarding its authenticity and the obligation to affirm it. He also cited the book of his teacher, Abu Bakr al-Marrudhi, concerning the Sunnis' affirmation of this report and the condemnation of whoever rejects or disparages it. Further discussion on this will follow under report No. 56].

  1. Kharijah ibn Mus‘ab (d. 168 AH) (may Allah have mercy upon him) said: “Can the rising (istiwa’) be anything other than sitting (julus)?”
