place.” [End quote].
2—Ibn ‘Atiyyah stated in al-Muharrar al-Wajiz (1/342): “‘The Most High’ (al-‘Ali): what is intended by it is highness of rank and status, not highness of place; because Allah is transcendent above being confined in space (al-tahayyuz). Al-Tabari narrated from a people that they said: ‘He is the Most High over His creation by the elevation of His place above the places of His creation.’ He said: ‘This is the statement of ignorant anthropomorphists (mujassimun), and it was more appropriate that it not be narrated.’” [End quote].
3—Ibn Furak stated in Mushkil al-Hadith (p. 391): “Allah, the Exalted, said: {Do you feel secure from Him who is in the heaven?} [Al-Mulk: 16], and the meaning of that is that He is above the heaven, not in the sense of the ‘aboveness’ of one who is settled in a place; because that is a characteristic of a limited, originated body; but rather in the sense of how He described Himself as being ‘above’ by way of: rank, status, greatness, and power.” [End quote].
4—Ibn Hazm stated in al-Fisal wa al-Nihal (2/98): “Allah, the Exalted, is not in a place or in a time at all. This is the view of the majority of the People of the Sunnah, and it is what we say; it is that which is not permissible to say otherwise due to the invalidity of everything besides it.” [End quote].
His statement: “the majority of the People of the Sunnah”—he does not mean by them the People of the Sunnah who affirm the attributes as it would occur to the mind of a Sunni; rather, he means those who negate the attributes (al-mu‘attilah), because he is one of them and follows their path in this chapter. Indeed, Ibn ‘Abd al-Hadi (may Allah have mercy on him) stated in Tabaqat ‘Ulama al-Hadith (3/350) while speaking about Ibn Hazm: “It has become clear to me that he is a hardcore Jahmi (jahmiyyun jaldun), who does not affirm from the meanings of the Beautiful Names of Allah except a little:"
