al-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him): “Where is Allah?”

And they said: “He is from above just as He is from below; it is not known where He is, nor is He described by a place, nor is He in the heaven, nor is He on the earth.” Thus, they denied direction (al-jiha) and limit (al-hadd).

  1. ‘Abd al-Ghani ibn ‘Abd al-Wahid al-Maqdisi (d. 600 AH, may Allah have mercy on him). [See: Dhayl Tabaqat al-Hanabilah (2/22)].

  2. Al-Dashti (d. 665 AH, may Allah have mercy on him), as his words will follow in this book of his at paragraph (24).

  3. Ibn Rajab (d. 795 AH, may Allah have mercy on him). He said in Dhayl al-Tabaqat (2/24): “In the Sahihayn, the affirmation of the term ‘place’ (al-makan) is established.”

  4. Sheikh ‘Abd al-‘Aziz ibn Baz (may Allah have mercy on him). He was asked in his commentary on al-Wasitiyyah (p. 29, from the recorded transcript): “There are those who, when asked about Allah, say: ‘He is not described by time or place’?”

He replied: “He erred regarding time, but as for place, it is established. Regarding time, He, the Glorified and Exalted, has always existed: {He is the First and the Last} [Al-Hadid: 3]. He has always existed eternally; it is not said that He was non-existent in time and then came to be. However, regarding place, He is above the Throne; He informed us about Himself: {The Most Merciful rose over the Throne} [Taha: 5].”
