Notes
They cited as evidence the hadith of Saʿd b. ʿUbāda, may God be pleased with him, which contains his statement, peace and blessings of God be upon him: "...and there is no person more jealous than Allah, and there is no person to whom the excuse is more beloved than Allah Almighty..." the hadith.
al-Bukhārī (7416) narrated it with the wording: "no one," and Muslim (3757) narrated it, and the wording is his.
Aḥmad narrated it in al-Musnad (4/248), and in it: Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān [ʿAbd Allāh b. Aḥmad] said: ʿUbayd Allāh al-Qawārīrī said: "There is no hadith more severe against the Jahmiyya than this hadith, his statement: 'there is no person to whom the excuse is more beloved than Allah Almighty.'"
And see: the Book Bayān Talbīs al-Jahmiyya by Ibn Taymiyya (7/391).
- (1) The Book and the Sunna indicate the permissibility of applying the term (thing/shayʾ) to Allah Almighty by way of informing, or to an attribute among His attributes, and upon this the people of the Sunna have titled chapters in their works. al-Bukhārī, may Allah have mercy on him, said in his Ṣaḥīḥ (Book of Monotheism (Tawhid)) (4/387) Chapter: {Say, "What thing is greatest in testimony?" Say, "Allah"} [al-Anʿām: 19]. Thus, Allah named Himself a thing, and the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, named the Qur'an a thing, and it is an attribute among the attributes of Allah, and He said: {Everything will perish except His Face} [al-Qaṣaṣ: 88]. End quote. Then he transmitted with a chain of transmission (7417) the hadith of Sahl b. Saʿd, may God be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said to a man: "Do you have anything of the Qur'an with you?" He said: "Yes, such-and-such sura, and such-and-such sura," for suras he named. al-Dārimī, may Allah have mercy on him, said in his Radd ʿalā al-Jahmiyya (161): "The word has been agreed upon by all creation that a thing only exists with a limit (Al-Ḥadd) and an attribute, and that a [non-]thing has no limit (Al-Ḥadd) and no attribute. For that reason, you said: He has no limit (Al-Ḥadd). But Allah Almighty has belied you, for He named Himself the greatest of things, the most magnificent of things, and the Creator of things. The Almighty said: {Say, "What thing is greatest in testimony?" Say, "Allah"}, and He said: {Everything will perish except His Face}. Thus, He named Himself the greatest of things, the most magnificent of things, and the Creator of things, and He has a limit (Al-Ḥadd) which He knows and no one else." End quote. Note: Applying the term (thing) to Allah Almighty is by way of informing about Him, or about an attribute among His attributes, not by way of names; therefore, it is not said: (the Thing) is a name among His names, Glory be to Him.
