Notes

It was narrated by way of al-Dāraquṭnī by Ibn al-Bannāʾ in al-Mukhtār min Uṣūl al-Sunna (p. 97), and it was narrated in abridged form by al-Ājurrī in al-Sharīʿa (581), and al-Lālakāʾī (928).

Ibn Taymiyya said in Majmūʿ al-Fatāwā (5/51): "Its chain of transmission is Sahih (Authentic) from Abū ʿUbayd."

2- Al-Tirmidhī, may Allah have mercy on him, said in al-Sunan: "This is a Hasan (Good) hadith."

Ibn al-Qayyim said in his Ḥāshiya ʿalā Abī Dāwūd (13/16): "This chain of transmission was declared Sahih (Authentic) by al-Tirmidhī in one place, and declared Hasan (Good) in another place. He declared it Sahih (Authentic) regarding the dream: al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī al-Khallāl informed us, Yazīd b. Hārūn narrated to us, Shuʿba narrated to us, from Yaʿlā b. ʿAṭāʾ, from Wakīʿ b. ʿAdus, from his uncle Abū Razīn al-ʿUqaylī, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said: 'The dream of a believer is one of forty parts of prophecy...' Al-Tirmidhī said: 'This is a Hasan (Good) Sahih (Authentic) hadith.'"

Ibn al-Qaṭṭān said: "So he is bound to declare the first hadith Sahih (Authentic), or restrict himself to declaring the second Hasan (Good), meaning: because the chain of transmission is the same."

He said: "If it is said: Perhaps he declared the first Hasan (Good) because it is from the narration of Ḥammād b. Salama, and declared the second Sahih (Authentic) because it is from the narration of Shuʿba, and the difference between them in memorization is clear. We say: He has declared countless hadiths of Ḥammād b. Salama Sahih (Authentic), and he is a figure about whom there is no debate according to him, nor according to any of the scholars, for he is an Imam, and Shuʿba's veneration and reverence for him is well-known." End quote.

3- Al-Ṭabarī in his Taʾrīkh (1/40).

4- Ibn Ḥibbān in his Ṣaḥīḥ (6141).

5- Ibn al-ʿArabī the Ash'arite al-Mālikī said in ʿĀriḍat al-Aḥwadhī (11/194): "We have narrated it through its routes, and it is Sahih (Authentic) in chain of transmission and Matn." End quote.

6- Al-Dhahabī in al-ʿUluww (13) said: "Its chain of transmission is Hasan (Good)."

7- Ibn Taymiyya, may Allah have mercy on him, cited this hadith as evidence in many of his books, including: Bayān Talbīs al-Jahmiyya (1/591), al-Istiqāma (1/161), and others, and he did not impugn its chain of transmission in any of his books.

8- Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him, declared it Sahih (Authentic) in Iʿlām al-Muwaqqiʿīn (4/276), and Tahdhīb
