26- And by it, Abu 'Abdullah said: Abu Bakr bin Salman narrated to us, Ibn Abi Shayba narrated to me, 'Abdullah bin Marwan bin Mu'awiya narrated to me, he said: I heard al-Asma'i (1), and he mentioned this hadith, and said: (al-'ama') in the speech of the Arabs is: the extended white cloud. As for (al-'ama) which is restricted to sight [i.e., blindness], it has nothing to do with this meaning (2).
27- And by it, Abu 'Abdullah Ibn Batta said: Abu Bakr 'Abd al-'Aziz bin Ja'far narrated to me, Abu Bakr al-Khallal narrated to us, Harb bin Isma'il narrated to me, he said:
Ishaq bin Rahuwayh said regarding the hadith of Abu Razin [16/A] al-'Uqayli [may God be pleased with him]: His statement: (in a cloud ('ama')): - meaning: a cloud (sahaba) - (3).
The people of the Sunna have several opinions regarding the meaning of (al-ʿamāʾ) in this hadith, and there is no disagreement among them, and for each opinion there is a witness from the Book and the Sunna:
1- Al-Khalīl b. Aḥmad, al-Aṣmaʿī, Abū ʿUbayd, Ibn Rāhawayh, and al-Azharī
