Volume 1 · Page 191

Translation · EN

26- And by it, Abu 'Abdullah said: Abu Bakr bin Salman narrated to us, Ibn Abi Shayba narrated to me, 'Abdullah bin Marwan bin Mu'awiya narrated to me, he said: I heard al-Asma'i (1), and he mentioned this hadith, and said: (al-'ama') in the speech of the Arabs is: the extended white cloud. As for (al-'ama) which is restricted to sight [i.e., blindness], it has nothing to do with this meaning (2).

27- And by it, Abu 'Abdullah Ibn Batta said: Abu Bakr 'Abd al-'Aziz bin Ja'far narrated to me, Abu Bakr al-Khallal narrated to us, Harb bin Isma'il narrated to me, he said:

Ishaq bin Rahuwayh said regarding the hadith of Abu Razin [16/A] al-'Uqayli [may God be pleased with him]: His statement: (in a cloud ('ama')): - meaning: a cloud (sahaba) - (3).

Notes

  • (1) He is ʿAbd al-Malik b. Qurayb al-Bāhilī, who died in the year 213 AH, may Allah have mercy on him. He was a person of Sunna and following. Abū Umayya al-Ṭarsūsī said: I heard Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal and Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn praising al-Aṣmaʿī regarding the Sunna. He said: And I heard ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī praising him. Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī said: The people of Basra were the people of the Arabic language; among them were people of desires, except for four, for they were people of Sunna: Abū ʿAmr b. al-ʿAlāʾ, al-Khalīl b. Aḥmad, Yūnus b. Ḥabīb, and al-Aṣmaʿī. [Tārīkh Baghdād (10/410) and Tahdhīb al-Kamāl (18/382)]
  • (2) Al-ʿArsh (8) by Muḥammad b. Abī Shayba, and Al-Ibāna al-Kubrā by Ibn Baṭṭa (2686). And in al-Ibāna there is an addition: (al-Aṣmaʿī said: It is possible that the meaning of the hadith: "in ʿamā" is that it was obscured [ʿamiya] from the scholars how He was).
  • (3) Al-Ibāna by Ibn Baṭṭa (2687) by way of al-Khallāl in al-Sunna, from Ḥarb (350).
  • The meaning of al-ʿamāʾ in this hadith according to the people of the Sunna:

The people of the Sunna have several opinions regarding the meaning of (al-ʿamāʾ) in this hadith, and there is no disagreement among them, and for each opinion there is a witness from the Book and the Sunna:

1- Al-Khalīl b. Aḥmad, al-Aṣmaʿī, Abū ʿUbayd, Ibn Rāhawayh, and al-Azharī
