Notes

ʿalā al-Jahmiyya, from his father, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Mahdī, from Sufyān." Then al-Dhahabī cited it.

He also narrated it from his father: "Wakīʿ narrated to us the hadith of Isrāʾīl" — then he cited it.

Al-Dhahabī said: "I say: And this hadith is authentic according to a group of the Traditionists. The Hadith master Ḍiyāʾ al-Dīn al-Maqdisī recorded it in his Ṣaḥīḥ, and it meets the condition of Ibn Ḥibbān, so I do not know if he recorded it or not?! For according to him, if an upright Hadith master narrates from a man who is not known by any Discrediting, then that is an authentic Chain of transmission." End quote.

Abū ʿAbd Allāh said: "(Ibn Ḥibbān did not record it in his Ṣaḥīḥ; however, he mentioned ʿAbd Allāh in al-Thiqāt (5/28) with this narration of his, and this is an authentication of the hadith by him), and God knows best."

We return to completing al-Dhahabī's statement: "(So if these Imams: Abū Isḥāq al-Sabīʿī, al-Thawrī, al-Aʿmash, Isrāʾīl, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Mahdī, Abū Aḥmad al-Zubayrī, Wakīʿ, Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, and others whose mention and number would be lengthy, who are the lamps of guidance and the lanterns of the dark, received this hadith with acceptance and narrated it, and did not reject it, nor did they discredit its Chain of transmission, then who are we to reject it and act pedantic against them?! Rather, we believe in it, and we consign its knowledge to God Almighty.

Imam Aḥmad said: 'We do not remove from our Lord any of His attributes due to a repugnance that is deemed repugnant, even if it repels the ears.'

So look at Wakīʿ b. al-Jarrāḥ, who succeeded Sufyān al-Thawrī in his knowledge and virtue, and was likened to him in his demeanor and guidance, how he rebuked that man and became angry when he saw him change color at this hadith)." End quote.

And his statement: "(we consign its knowledge)": meaning its modality, as was previously noted.

11- Al-Haythamī said in Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid (10/59): "Its narrators are the narrators of the Ṣaḥīḥ, except for ʿAbd Allāh b. Khalīfa al-Hamdānī; and he is trustworthy." End quote.

12- Abū ʿAbd Allāh said: The hadith is authentic in all its states:

a- The disagreement in its Chain of transmission does not harm if we do not find a preference for it, so how much more so when the preference is that it is Marfu'?! For the Mawquf is generally a proof, and from ʿUmar, may God be pleased with him, it is sufficient for you, and in matters where there is no room for opinion, it is enough for you!
