Notes

al-Marrūdhī authored a book on the virtue of the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, and mentioned in it his being seated upon the Throne. al-Qāḍī said: And this is the view of Abū Dāwūd, Aḥmad b. Aṣram, Yaḥyā b. Abī Ṭālib, Abū Bakr b. Ḥammād, Abū Jaʿfar al-Dimashqī, ʿAbbās al-Dūrī, Isḥāq b. Rāhawayh, ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Warrāq, Ibrāhīm al-Aṣbahānī, Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī, Hārūn b. Maʿrūf, Muḥammad b. Ismāʿīl al-Sulamī, Muḥammad b. Muṣʿab b. al-ʿĀbid, Abū Bakr b. Ṣadaqa, Muḥammad b. Bishr b. Sharīk, Abū Qilāba, ʿAlī b. Sahl, Abū ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-Nūr, Abū ʿUbayd, al-Ḥasan b. Faḍl, Hārūn b. al-ʿAbbās al-Hāshimī, Ismāʿīl b. Ibrāhīm al-Hāshimī, Muḥammad b. Abī ʿImrān al-Fārisī the ascetic, Muḥammad b. Yūnus al-Baṣrī, ʿAbd Allāh the son of Imam Aḥmad, al-Marrūdhī, and Bishr al-Ḥāfī. End quote.

I say (Ibn al-Qayyim): And it is the view of Ibn Jarīr al-Ṭabarī, and the Imam of all of them, Mujāhid, the Imam of Tafsir. It is also the view of Abū al-Ḥasan al-Dāraquṭnī, and from his poetry regarding it... then he mentioned it. End quote.

9 - Sheikh Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm Āl al-Shaykh (d. 1389 AH), may Allah have mercy on him — the former Mufti of the Saudi lands — said while speaking about the Praiseworthy Station (al-Maqām al-Maḥmūd) in Majmūʿ al-Fatāwā (2/136): It is said: The Great Intercession. And it is said: His seating him with Him upon the Throne, as is well-known from the view of the people of the Sunna. The apparent meaning is that there is no contradiction between the two views, so reconciliation between them is possible: that both are part of that [i.e., the Praiseworthy Station], and being seated upon the Throne is more profound. End quote.

I say: Thus do the people of knowledge in every era transmit their acceptance of this report and their use of it as evidence without any objection.

As for what has been reported from them regarding the condemnation of whoever rejects this report or attacks it, it is more abundant than what has preceded, and from it is:

1 - Isḥāq b. Rāhawayh (d. 238 AH), may Allah have mercy on him, said: Whoever rejects this hadith is a Jahmī.

2 - Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī (d. 285 AH), may Allah have mercy on him, said: No one denies this except the people of innovation.

3 - ʿAbd Allāh b. Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal (d. 290 AH), may Allah have mercy on him, said: Only the Jahmiyya deny it, and I condemn everyone who rejects this hadith, and he is accused regarding the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him.
