one uncreated Qurʾān, neither made nor lorded over, but rather it is an attribute among the attributes of His Essence; He has never ceased speaking it. Whoever says other than this is a disbelieving, misguided, misguiding innovator, opposing the schools of law of the Sunna and the congregation." End quote.

  1. Ibn al-Ḥanbalī in al-Risāla al-Wāḍiḥa fī al-Radd ʿalā al-Ashāʿira, in his refutation of them regarding the issue of the Qurʾān (2/684), where he said: "Know, my brother—may God grant us and you success—that the Ash'arites, in invalidating the Qurʾān, follow the path of the Bāṭiniyya in heresy and apostasy."

He also said (2/307): "The Jahmīs—may God curse them—are of various categories:

b. Among them are those who say: The Qurʾān is the speech of God, and do not say whether it is created or uncreated.

c. A group of them says: It is a quotation of that Qurʾān... He said: All of these categories are the Jahmīs, and they are disbelieving heretics..." End quote.

It is said [in response]: According to you, this is not the speech of God except figuratively, whereas it is known by necessity that this Arabic speech is the Qurʾān, and it is the Book of God and His speech... And according to you, it is impossible for the Qurʾān to be recited because it is not with letters or sounds; rather, it is one in essence, without chapters or verses... God Almighty said: {And if any one of the polytheists seeks your protection, then grant him protection so that he may hear the words of God} [al-Tawba: 6]. And according to them, what is heard is not the speech of God literally, but rather it is created, by which the speech of God is quoted according to one of their two statements, and an expression expressing His speech according to the other statement, and it is created according to both statements. Thus, what is recited, heard, written, and preserved is not the speech of God, but rather it is
