His praise, does not possess points of articulation, and His speech is neither with letter nor sound." End quote.

3. Al-Juwaynī said in al-Irshād (p. 124): "For speech, according to the people of truth, is a meaning subsisting in the self, neither with letter nor sound." End quote.

4. Ibn ʿAṭiyya said in al-Muḥarrar al-Wajīz (2/137): "And the speech of God to the Prophet Moses, peace be upon him, is without modality, without delimitation, without allowing origination, and without letters or sounds. That which those firmly grounded in knowledge hold is: that speech is the meaning subsisting in the self, and God creates for Moses or Gabriel a perception from the direction of hearing by which the speech is acquired." End quote.

And he said: "Thus, Moses heard the eternal speech of God, and it is neither with letter nor sound." End quote.

5. Al-Qurṭubī said in al-Mufhim fī Sharḥ Muslim (6/181): "His speech, Almighty, is neither with letter nor sound, as is demonstrated with proof in its appropriate place." End quote.

6. Ibn Ḥajar said in al-Fatḥ (13/458): "And if the mention of sound is established by these authentic (Sahih) hadiths, it is obligatory to believe in it, then either consignment (tafwīḍ) or interpretation (taʾwīl)." End quote.

And he said (13/460): "And the Hanbalis affirmed that God speaks with letter and sound." End quote.

7. Al-Bayjūrī said in Sharḥ al-Jawhara regarding the attribute of the speech of God Almighty: "An eternal attribute subsisting in His Essence, Almighty, neither with letter nor sound." End quote.

I say: The leading scholars of the Sunna have declared as disbelievers those who deny letter and sound in the speech of God, Mighty and Majestic, and those who deny the reality of the speech of God Almighty to Moses, peace be upon him, and that it was with a sound that Moses, peace be upon him, heard from the Lord Almighty. Among that:

1. ʿAbd Allāh b. Aḥmad, may God have mercy on him, said in al-Sunna (518): "I asked my father, may God have mercy on him, about a people who say: When God, Mighty and Majestic, spoke to Moses, He did not speak with a sound?

So my father said: 'Yes indeed, your Lord, Mighty and Majestic, spoke with a sound; we narrate these hadiths just as they came.'

And he said: 'The hadith of Ibn Masʿūd, may God be pleased with him: When God, Mighty and Majestic, speaks, a sound is heard from Him like the dragging of a chain on smooth rock.' My father, may God have mercy on him, said: 'And the Jahmiyya deny this.'
