He said: What did you intend by it?
I said: The Qur'an is an attribute among the attributes of God with which He described Himself; we do not deny that nor do we reject it. I said to him: And what do the anthropomorphists say?
He said: Whoever says: A sight like my sight, and a hand like my hand.
And Ḥanbal said in another place: And a foot like my foot, then he has likened God Almighty to His creation, and this delimits Him, and this is evil speech, and this is delimited. I do not like speaking about this.
ʿAbdullāh said: Strip the Qur'an of any additions.
And the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said: "He places His foot"(2).
We believe in it, and we do not delimit it, nor do we reject it against the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him; rather, we believe in it. God Almighty said: {And whatever the Messenger gives you, take it, and whatever he forbids you from, abstain} [Al-Ḥashr: 7]. For God, Mighty and Majestic, has commanded us to take what he brought, and to abstain from what he forbade. His names and His attributes are from Him, uncreated. We seek refuge in God from slipping, suspicion, and doubt. Indeed, He is capable of all things.
قال: ما أردتَ بها؟
قلت: القرآن صفة من صفات الله وصف بها نفسه، لا ننكر ذلك ولا نردّه. قلت له: والمُشبِّهة ما يقولون؟
قال: مَن قال: بصرٌ كبصري، ويدٌ كيدي.
وقال حنبل في موضع آخر: وقَدَمٌ كقدمي، فقد شبَّه الله تعالى بخلقه، وهذا يحده، وهذا كلام سوء، وهذا محدود، الكلام في هذا لا أحبه.
قال عبد الله: جردوا القرآن(١).
وقال النبي ﷺ: «يضع قدمَه»(٢).
نؤمن به، ولا نحده ولا نردُّه على رسول الله ﷺ، بل نؤمن به، قال الله تعالى: ﴿وَمَا ءَاتَىٰكُمُ ٱلرَّسُولُ فَخُذُوهُ وَمَا نَهَىٰكُمْ عَنْهُ فَٱنتَهُواْ﴾ [الحشر:٧]، فقد أمرنا اللهُ عز وجل بالأخذ بما جاء به، والنهي عما نهى، وأسماؤه وصفاته منه غير مخلوقة، ونعوذُ باللهِ من الزَّلَل والارتياب والشَّك، إنَّه على كُلِّ شيءٍ قدير.
- قال الخلال: وزادني أبو القاسم الجبلي، عن حنبل في هذا الكلام:
(١) عبد الله هو ابن مسعود رضي الله عنه، وهذا رواه ابن أبي شيبة في «المصنف» (٣٠٢٥٢)، وعبدالرزاق في «مصنفه» (٧٩٤٤).
(٢) يُشير إلى حديث أنس رضي الله عنه عن النبي ﷺ قال: «يُلقي في النار وتقول هل من مزيد حتى يضع قَدَمَه فتقول: قَط قط». [رواه البخاري (٤٨٤٨)، (٧٣٨٤)].
