Ithbāt al-Ḥadd by al-Dashtī — Edited by ‘Ādil Āl Ḥamdān
Volume 1 · Page 328

Translation · EN

ʿUbayd Allāh — who is al-Rāzī — the companion of Muḥammad b. al-Ḥasan al-Shaybānī, imprisoned a man for Jahmism. Then he repented, so he was brought to Hishām to test him. He said: Praise be to God for the repentance. Do you testify that God, the Exalted, is on His Throne, distinct from His creation?

He said: I testify that God is on His Throne, but I do not know what 'distinct from His creation' means.

So he said: Return him to the prison, for he has not repented.

  • Shaykh al-Islām [al-Harawī] said: For the explanation of the issue of distinctness (baynūna) in the book Al-Fārūq, there is a chapter that makes repeating it here unnecessary.

Shaykh al-Islām [al-Harawī] said: And I asked Yaḥyā b. ʿAmmār about Abū Ḥātim b. Ḥibbān al-Bustī. I said: Did you see him?!

He said: How could I not have seen him, when we expelled him from Sijistān?! He had much knowledge, but he did not have much religion: he came to us and denied Al-Ḥadd for God, so we expelled him from Sijistān (1).

[This is despite the fact that those whose statements Shaykh al-Islām mentions are from the Imams of hadith, jurisprudence (fiqh), Sufism, and others, and he mentioned from them the censure of the Kullābiyya, the Karrāmiyya, the Ashʿarites, and their likes for what they innovated that contradicts the way of the people of the Sunna and hadith] [Bayān Talbīs al-Jahmiyya (3/699).]

Notes

  • (1) [Ibn Taymiyya mentioned all of this, and it is in the book Dhamm al-Kalām: (1208, 1209, 1192, 1193, 1190, 1191, 1210, and 1292).]
