God Almighty described Himself with attributes, and His Messenger, peace and blessings of God be upon him, described Him with attributes, yet you who claim that you are from the people of the Sunna and hadith—leave aside the Jahmiyya and the Mu'tazilites—sometimes negate them and distort their texts, or you make them not known except as wishful reading (amānī), and these two are among what God Almighty faulted the People of the Book before us for.
And sometimes you affirm them with an affirmation alongside which you negate what the texts affirmed, claiming that the texts negated it, and abandoning the meanings that it indicated which there is no doubt in its indication of, along with what is in their combining of contradictory matters of contradicting explicit rationality.
So you and your imams, in this which you say you affirm:
Either you affirm what you negate, thus combining negation and affirmation!
Or you affirm what has no reality in the external world nor in the mind!
And this speech is said by the negators and the affirmers to these people, such as: al-Ashʿarī, al-Khaṭṭābī, the Judge Abū Yaʿlā, and others from the factions.
And these affirmers say: How did you permit for yourselves these additions in negation and this shortcoming in affirmation regarding what the Book and the Sunna obligated, while you condemned the imams of the religion for their refutation of an innovation innovated by the Jahmiyya, the content of which is the denial of the existence of the Lord Almighty and the establishment of His reality, and they expressed that with a phrase, so they affirmed that phrase to clarify the establishment of the meaning that those people negated.
And where in the Book and the Sunna is it prohibited to refute falsehood with a phrase that corresponds to it?
