among the Companions and the Successors, nor from the known Imams of the religion, nor is any hadith narrated with them from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of God be upon him, nor are they found in any of the Books of Allah revealed from Him. Rather, these are from the statements of the Jahmiyya and from the scholastic theology that the Predecessors (Salaf) agreed upon censuring when it was invented by those who invented it. Thus, wherever the censure of the Jahmiyya appears in the speech of the Predecessors (Salaf), the people of these expressions are included in that, and wherever the censure of scholastic theology and the theologians appears from them, the people of these expressions are included in that. For when the innovators invented that, the Imams of the religion censured them abundantly, and their speech regarding that is extensive and works have been authored on it, to the extent that the Predecessors (Salaf) and the Imams mentioned the exact forms of these expressions and their likes among what they condemned of the Jahmiyya and the people of innovated scholastic theology. End quote.

— And he also said in Bayān Talbīs al-Jahmiyya (3/784):

The scholars of Islam and the Sunna mentioned that this negation was first innovated in Islam by the Jahmiyya, and it has no root in the religion of the Muslims or others. Rather, what is found in the Book of Allah, the Sunna of His Messenger, and the speech of the Predecessors (Salaf) of the Umma and its Imams is the negation of perceiving His end and the negation of encompassing Him, as He the Exalted said: {Vision perceives Him not} [al-Anʿām: 103].

And those of the Predecessors (Salaf) who spoke said to the one who asked him about these things: "Do you not see the sky?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Do you see all of it?" He said: "No." He said: "Then Allah is greater."

And likewise His statement: {but they do not encompass it in knowledge} [Ṭā Hā: 110], whether the pronoun refers to Allah, or to what is before them, for that indicates the lack of encompassing
