And likewise went up, which is the fourth, and Abū ʿUbayda, the companion of al-Shaybānī,

Chooses this statement in his Tafsir, more knowledgeable of the Qurʾān than the Jahmī.

  • And he said: The rising over of a thing upon another entails its settling, firmness, and establishment, as He the Exalted said: {and it came to rest upon [Mount] Jūdī} [Hūd: 44], meaning: it anchored upon it and settled on its back. [Mukhtaṣar al-Ṣawāʿiq (3/916)].

13 - Sheikh ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ḥasan (d. 1285 AH), May Allah have mercy on him, said in al-Durar al-Saniyya (3/215): The meaning of istawā is: settled, ascended, and rose high, and all of them have one meaning; no one denies this except a heretical Jahmī, who judges Allah and His names and attributes with negation, may Allah fight them.. End quote.

14 - Sheikh ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Saʿdī (d. 1376 AH), May Allah have mercy on him.

He said: .. We affirm that He rose over His Throne with a rising that befits His majesty, whether that is interpreted as: ascending, or His rising high over His Throne, or settling, or sitting, for these interpretations are reported from the Predecessors (Salaf). So we affirm it for Allah in a manner in which no one resembles or is similar to Him, and there is no prohibition in that if we couple this affirmation with the negation of resemblance to created beings.. End quote. [al-Ajwiba al-Saʿdiyya al-Kuwaytiyya (p. 146)]

15 - Sheikh ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Bāz (d. 1420 AH), May Allah have mercy on him, as he was asked about this meaning in his recorded Explanation of al-ʿAqīda al-Wāsiṭiyya, and he said:

Rising over has many meanings: such as settled, rose high, and ascended, all of them are expressions
