The discourse on the interpretation of the statement of Him Whose praise is majestic: ﴿Day of Recompense﴾.

Abū Jaʿfar said: And "al-dīn" in this position has the Interpretation of reckoning and requital for deeds, as Kaʿb ibn Juʿayl said:

When they shoot at us, we shoot at them, ... and we requite them just as they lend to us. (1)

And as another poet said:

Know and be certain that your kingdom is fleeting, ... and know that as you requite, you shall be requited. (2)

Meaning: as you reward, you shall be rewarded.

And of this is the statement of God, Whose praise is majestic: {No! But you deny the Recompense} (9)—meaning: the requital—{and indeed, over you are keepers} (10) [Sūrat al-Infiṭār: 9, 10], who enumerate what you do of deeds; and His statement, Exalted be He: {Then why do you not, if you are not to be requited} [Sūrat al-Wāqiʿa: 86], meaning: not to be requited for your deeds nor called to account.

And "al-dīn" has other meanings in the speech of the Arabs besides the meaning of reckoning and requital, which we shall mention in their proper places, God willing.
