to a straight path. And whoever obeys God and the Messenger—those will be with the ones upon whom God has bestowed favor of the prophets, the truthful ones, the martyrs, and the righteous} [Sūrat al-Nisāʾ: 66–69].

Abū Jaʿfar said: That which Muḥammad, peace and blessings of God be upon him, and his nation were commanded to ask their Lord for guidance toward—namely, the straight path—is guidance to the path whose description God, magnificent is His praise, has described. And that path is the path of those whom God has described with what He described them with in His Revelation, and He promised whoever travels it and remains upright upon it, obedient to God and His Messenger, peace and blessings of God be upon him, that He will bring them to their places of arrival; and God does not fail in His promise.

And similar to what we have said regarding that, a report has been narrated from Ibn ʿAbbās and others.

188 - Muḥammad ibn al-ʿAlāʾ narrated to us, saying: ʿUthmān ibn Saʿīd narrated to us, saying: Bishr ibn ʿUmāra narrated to us, saying: Abū Rawq narrated to us, from al-Ḍaḥḥāk, from Ibn ʿAbbās: "The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor," he says: The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor through obedience to You and worship of You—from among the angels, the prophets, the truthful ones, the martyrs, and the righteous, who obeyed You and worshipped You. (1)

189 - Aḥmad ibn Ḥāzim al-Ghifārī narrated to me, saying: ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Mūsā informed us, from Abū Jaʿfar, from Rabīʿ: "The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor," he said: The prophets. (2)

190 - Al-Qāsim narrated to me, saying: Al-Ḥusayn narrated to us, saying: Ḥajjāj narrated to me, from Ibn Jurayj, saying: Ibn ʿAbbās said: "upon whom You have bestowed favor," he said: The believers. (3)

191 - Al-Qāsim narrated to us, saying: Al-Ḥusayn narrated to us, saying: Wakīʿ said: "upon whom You have bestowed favor," the Muslims. (4)
