and two verses concerning the description of the disbelievers, and thirteen concerning the hypocrites (1).

279- Sufyān ibn Wakīʿ narrated to us, he said: My father narrated to us, from Sufyān, from a man, from Mujāhid, the like of it (2).

280- Al-Muthannā ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to me, he said: Mūsā ibn Masʿūd narrated to us, he said: Shibl narrated to us, from Ibn Abī Najīḥ, from Mujāhid, the like of it (3).

281- I was narrated from ʿAmmār ibn al-Ḥasan, he said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Jaʿfar narrated to us, from his father, from al-Rabīʿ ibn Anas, he said: Four verses from the opening of this Surah—meaning Sūrat al-Baqarah—are concerning those who believe, and two verses are concerning the leaders of the confederates.

And the most correct of the two views in my opinion, and the most resembling the interpretation of the Book, is the first view, which is: that those whom God, Exalted be His mention, described as believing in the unseen, and with what He, Exalted be His praise, described them with in the first two verses (4), are other than those whom He described as believing in that which was revealed to Muḥammad and that which was revealed to the messengers before him, because of the reasons I mentioned earlier for those who said that.

And among what also indicates the correctness of this view along with that is that He categorized—after describing the believers with the two attributes He described, and after classifying each class of them just as He classified the disbelievers—

(1) Narration 278—Abū ʿĀṣim: He is al-Nabīl, the great Hadith master. ʿĪsā ibn Maymūn al-Makkī: He is known as Ibn Dāya. Ibn ʿUyayna said: "He was a reciter of the Qurʾān; he recited to Ibn Kathīr." Abū Ḥātim and others declared him trustworthy.\
(2) Narration 279—This chain of transmission is weak, due to the weakness of Sufyān ibn Wakīʿ, and due to the obscurity of the man from whom Sufyān al-Thawrī narrated. However, the narration is connected through the two chains of transmission before it and after it.\
(3) Narration 280—Mūsā ibn Masʿūd: He is Abū Ḥudhayfa al-Nahdī, and he is trustworthy; al-Bukhārī narrated from him in his Ṣaḥīḥ, and Ibn Saʿd and al-ʿIjlī declared him trustworthy. Al-Bukhārī wrote his biography in al-Kabīr (4/1/295). Shibl: He is Ibn ʿAbbād al-Makkī, the reciter, and he is trustworthy; Aḥmad, Ibn Maʿīn, and others declared him trustworthy.
And this narration, with its three chains of transmission, was mentioned by Ibn Kathīr (1/80) without detailing them; he said: "And the apparent view is the statement of Mujāhid—in what al-Thawrī narrated from a man, from Mujāhid, and which more than one narrated from Ibn Abī Najīḥ, from Mujāhid, that he said...".\
(4) Al-awla: al-ūlā (the first), and it is not an error.
