in what you have brought from God, Mighty and Majestic, and what those before you among the messengers brought; they do not differentiate between them, nor do they deny what they brought them from their Lord (1)."

290- Mūsā ibn Hārūn narrated to us, he said: ʿAmr ibn Ḥammād narrated to us, he said: Asbāṭ narrated to us, from al-Suddī in a report he mentioned, from Abū Mālik, and from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Ibn ʿAbbās—and from Murrah al-Hamdānī, from Ibn Masʿūd, and from some people among the Companions of the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him: "{And who believe in what has been revealed to you, and what was revealed before you, and of the Hereafter they are certain}: these are the believers from the People of the Book (2)."

The statement concerning the interpretation of His statement, may His praise be exalted: {And of the Hereafter they are certain (4)}

Abū Jaʿfar said: As for the Hereafter (al-ākhira), it is an adjective for the abode (al-dār), as He, may His praise be exalted, said: {And indeed, the Home of the Hereafter—that is the [true] life, if only they knew} [Sūrat al-ʿAnkabūt: 64]. It is only described as such because it becomes the latter (ākhira) to a former (ūlā) that preceded it, just as you say to a man: "I bestowed favor upon you time after time, but you did not thank me for the former nor the latter." It only became the latter to the former because the former preceded it. Likewise is the Home of the Hereafter; it is named the latter (ākhira) because the former abode preceded it, so the one following it became the latter. It is also possible that it is named the latter because it is delayed from the creation, just as the worldly life (al-dunyā) is named "dunyā" because of its nearness (dunūw) to the creation.
