and in the Books they brought. Then He—may His praise be exalted—confirmed the matter of the believers among the Arabs and among the People of the Book who believe in Muḥammad (Peace and blessings of God be upon him) and in what was revealed to him and to the messengers before him, with His statement: {They are upon guidance from their Lord, and it is they who are the successful} (5). Thus He informed that they exclusively are the people of guidance and success, to the exclusion of others, and that others are the people of misguidance and loss.

The discourse concerning the interpretation of the statement of Him whose praise is exalted: {They are upon guidance from their Lord}

The commentators differed regarding whom God—may His praise be exalted—meant by His statement: "They are upon guidance from their Lord." Some of them said: He meant thereby the people of the two preceding attributes—meaning the believers in the unseen among the Arabs, and the believers in what was revealed to Muḥammad (Peace and blessings of God be upon him) and to the messengers before him. And He described both groups together as being upon guidance from Him, and that they are the successful.

292- Mūsā ibn Hārūn narrated to me, saying: ʿAmr ibn Ḥammād narrated to us, saying: Asbāṭ narrated to us, from al-Suddī, in a report he mentioned, from Abū Mālik, and from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Ibn ʿAbbās—and from Murra al-Hamdānī, from Ibn Masʿūd, and from some people among the Companions of the Prophet (Peace and blessings of God be upon him): As for "those who believe in the unseen", they are the believers among the Arabs; and "those who believe in what has been revealed to you", they are the believers among the People of the Book. Then He joined the two groups together and said: "They are upon guidance from their Lord, and it is they who are the successful." (1)
