from Muḥammad ibn Abī Muḥammad, the freed slave of Zayd ibn Thābit, from ʿIkrima, or from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās: "Those are upon guidance from their Lord": meaning, upon light from their Lord, and uprightness upon what has come to them (1).

The statement concerning the interpretation of His statement, may His praise be exalted: {And it is those who are the successful (5)}

The interpretation of His statement: "And it is those who are the successful" is: they are the successful ones who attain what they sought from God, exalted is His mention, through their deeds and their faith in God, His Books, and His Messengers, in terms of attaining the reward, eternity in the Gardens, and salvation from the punishment that God, blessed and exalted is He, has prepared for His enemies. Just as:

294- Ibn Ḥumayd narrated to us, saying: Salama narrated to us, saying: Ibn Isḥāq narrated to us, from Muḥammad ibn Abī Muḥammad, the freed slave of Zayd ibn Thābit, from ʿIkrima, or from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās: {And it is those who are the successful} meaning, those who attained what they sought, and were saved from the evil of what they fled from.

And among the indications that one of the meanings of success (falāḥ) is attaining what is sought and achieving one's need, is the statement of Labīd ibn Rabīʿa:

Understand, if you have not yet understood, ... and indeed, successful is the one who has understood (2)

He means: he achieved his need and attained good. And from it is the statement of the rajaz poet:

I have lost a mother who gave birth to Riyāḥ ... she brought him forth with widespread legs (3) She thinks that she has given birth to success! ... I testify it does not increase her in success (falāḥ)

He means: in good and closeness to her need. And al-falāḥ is a verbal noun from your saying: so-and-so succeeded (aflaḥa), he succeeds (yufliḥu), success (iflāḥan, falāḥan, and falaḥan). And al-falāḥ also means: survival (baqāʾ), and from it is the statement of Labīd:

We settle in lands, all of which were settled before us ... and we hope for survival (falāḥ) after ʿĀd and Ḥimyar (4)

He intends survival. And from it also is the statement of ʿAbīd:

Survive (afliḥ) with whatever you wish, for one may be overtaken by weak... ...ness, and the intelligent one may be deceived (5)

He intends: live and survive with whatever you wish. And likewise is the statement of al-Nābigha of Banū Dhubyān:

And every youth will be separated by death ... even if he becomes wealthy, and even if he meets survival (falāḥ) (6)

Meaning, success in his need and survival.
