317- Mūsā ibn Hārūn narrated to me, he said: ʿAmr ibn Ḥammād narrated to us, he said: Asbāṭ narrated to us, from Ismāʿīl al-Suddī, in a report he mentioned, from Abū Mālik, and from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Ibn ʿAbbās—and from Murrah, from Ibn Masʿūd, and from people among the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of God be upon him): {And among the people are some who say, "We believe in Allah and in the Last Day," but they are not believers}, they are the hypocrites.

318- Al-Muthannā narrated to me, he said: Isḥāq narrated to us, from Ibn Abī Jaʿfar, from his father, from al-Rabīʿ ibn Anas, regarding His statement: {And among the people are some who say, "We believe in Allah and in the Last Day,"} to {So Allah increased their disease, and for them is a painful punishment}, he said: These are the people of Hypocrisy.

319- Al-Qāsim narrated to us, he said: Al-Ḥusayn ibn Dāwūd narrated to us, he said: Ḥajjāj narrated to me, from Ibn Jurayj, regarding His statement: {And among the people are some who say, "We believe in Allah and in the Last Day," but they are not believers}, he said: This is the hypocrite; his speech contradicts his deed, his secret contradicts his open state, his entering contradicts his exiting, and his presence contradicts his absence (1).

And the interpretation of that is: when Allah, majestic is His praise, united for His Messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings of God be upon him) his affair in the abode of his migration, and his presence became established therein, and Allah made His word dominant through it, and Islam spread among the dwellings of its people, and through it the Muslims subdued those polytheists from the idol worshipers who were in it, and those of the People of the Book who were in it were humbled—the Jewish rabbis exposed their rancor toward the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of God be upon him) and displayed enmity and hatred toward him out of envy and transgressing hostility (2), except for a small group among them whom Allah guided to Islam so they embraced Islam, just as He, majestic is His praise, said: {Many of the People of the Scripture wish they could turn you back to disbelief after you have believed, out of envy from themselves after the truth has become clear to them} [Sūrat al-Baqarah: 109]; and they secretly agreed with them on hostility toward the Prophet (peace and blessings of God be upon him) and his Companions
